New NIMH Funding: Laboratories to Optimize Digital Health (R01)
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) under PAR-25-136, specifically designed to support the development of digital health ‘test beds.’ This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between commercial technology development and clinical effectiveness by leveraging existing platforms with a substantial user base.
Scope of Research
The primary goal is to test strategies that increase the reach, efficiency, and quality of digital mental health interventions. This includes applications focusing on suicide behaviors, serious mental illness (SMI), and populations experiencing health disparities. NIMH encourages projects that utilize an experimental therapeutics approach to understand the mechanisms of action behind these digital tools.
Eligibility and Partnership
Eligible organizations include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations (including small businesses), and various government entities. A critical component of this NOFO is the requirement for partnerships between academic researchers and software developers to ensure that the proposed digital health platforms are technically robust and scalable.
Submission Requirements
- Must utilize the R01 Research Project Grant mechanism.
- Clinical trials are required.
- Platforms must have a sufficient existing user base (ideally at least 1,000 active users).
- Data must be interoperable with relevant health information systems.
- Compliance with the NIMH Data Management and Sharing Policy is mandatory.
Deadlines: Standard NIH due dates apply (February 5, June 5, and October 5). The earliest submission date is June 5, 2026.
As noted in peer-reviewed research, the scalability of digital mental health tools is often hindered by a lack of integration into existing clinical workflows; therefore, deployment-focused studies are essential for sustainable impact (Torous et al., 2020, JMIR Mental Health).
