NIH RFA-DK-26-315: Advancing Digital Health Technology for Type 2 Diabetes Management

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has announced a new funding opportunity, RFA-DK-26-315, designed to address the growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes (T2D) through innovative digital solutions. As T2D prevalence is projected to reach nearly 14% of the U.S. population by 2030, a paradigm shift in management is required to overcome clinical inertia and improve patient outcomes (ElSayed et al., 2023).

Scope of Research

This NOFO invites R01 applications for clinical trials that examine the efficacy of digital health technology (DHT) approaches. Key areas of interest include:

  • Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) efficacy in patients not taking insulin.
  • Telemedicine and virtual coaching models.
  • Gamification and mobile health (mHealth) applications for behavioral change.
  • AI-based digital health navigators to improve adoption and sustainability.

Eligibility Requirements

Applications are open to a wide range of U.S. organizations, including:

  • Higher Education Institutions (Public and Private).
  • Nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status.
  • For-profit organizations and Small Businesses.
  • State, Local, and Tribal Governments.

Note: Foreign organizations and foreign components of U.S. organizations are not eligible to apply.

Partnership and Engagement

A core requirement for this funding is meaningful stakeholder engagement. Investigators must move beyond simple focus groups to involve patients, caregivers, clinicians, and community organizations throughout the research process. While not required, partnering with industry providers for virtual diabetes clinic offerings is encouraged to ensure practical application within the healthcare system.

Important Deadlines:

  • October 6, 2026

Applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization.
