NIH Launches PAR-25-338: Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry for Medical Diagnostics
The Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have announced a renewed funding opportunity aimed at accelerating the translation of innovative technologies from the laboratory to the clinical setting. The PAR-25-338 initiative focuses on Academic-Industrial Partnerships for the translation of technologies for diagnosis and treatment.
Scope of Research
The primary purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to stimulate efforts to translate scientific discoveries and engineering developments into methods or tools that address problems in basic or applied research. Targeted areas include risk assessment, detection, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and disease management. The rationale is to meet the evolving requirements for technologies in pre-clinical, clinical, and non-clinical settings.
Partnership Requirements
A critical component of this funding is the partnership structure. Each application must establish an inter-disciplinary, multi-institutional research team that includes at least one academic and one industrial organization. This strategic alliance is expected to combine laboratory strengths with industry expertise in manufacturability, reliability, and regulatory standards to ensure the solution is suitable for end-users.
Eligibility and Funding
- Award Budget: Application budgets are limited to $499,000 in direct costs per year.
- Project Period: The maximum project period is 5 years.
- Clinical Trials: Not allowed. This opportunity focuses on technical development and validation.
- Deadlines: New applications are due on February 5, June 5, and October 5 annually through January 2028.
