Empowering Breakthroughs: The NIAID New Innovators Award (DP2)

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has announced the New Innovators Award (PAR-25-179), a funding mechanism specifically engineered to support exceptionally creative Early Stage Investigators (ESIs). Unlike traditional research grants that rely heavily on preliminary data, the DP2 award prioritizes the innovative potential of the investigator and the transformative nature of the proposed research.

Scope of Research

The program supports high-risk, high-reward research within the NIAID mission, including immunology, transplantation, and infectious diseases. This initiative is designed to address major contemporary challenges that require unconventional approaches. Research funded through this mechanism has historically been linked to significant advancements in bioscience, as highlighted by Azoulay et al. (2011), who found that ‘people-not-projects’ funding models often lead to higher levels of breakthrough innovation compared to traditional project-based constraints.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must be classified as Early Stage Investigators, defined as individuals who have completed their terminal research degree or post-graduate clinical training within the last 10 years and have not yet been awarded a substantial NIH independent research grant. Applicants must hold an independent research position at a domestic (U.S.) institution.

Partnership and Institutional Support

While the focus is on the individual investigator, the sponsoring institution must demonstrate a clear commitment to the applicant’s success. This includes providing the necessary space, equipment, and administrative support to carry out the five-year project. Successful applications typically reflect a synergy between the investigator’s bold ideas and the institution’s robust research environment.

  • No preliminary data is required for submission.
  • A minimum of 25% research effort must be dedicated to the project.
  • The award provides up to $1.5 million in direct costs.
  • Projects must fall within the mission of the NIAID.

Deadlines: October 14, 2025; October 14, 2026; October 14, 2027.
