Smartphone sensing: the phone sees what wearables miss.

Phones capture how participants move, where they spend time, how they use their phone and the world around them. Data is collected passively, with consent and no extra effort, and joins the same timeline as wearables, questionnaires and EMAs. Try it: choose streams and allow sensing.

Streams this study collects

Usage is recorded as counts and durations. Message content, typed text and speech are never collected.

Choose streams, then allow sensing on the phone.

Context from daily life, without extra effort.

iPhone

Apple SensorKit

  • Phone, app and device usage
  • Calls and messages usage, without content
  • Keyboard and speech metrics, without what was typed or said
  • Visits to frequently visited places, motion, ambient light and pressure
Android

Sensors and Health Connect

  • Motion and activity recognition, such as walking or in a vehicle

  • Ambient light, proximity, and Health Connect steps and sleep
Apple Watch

With SensorKit

  • Heart rate

How it works

From approval to analysis-ready data.

Set up

A custom study app, built for you

  • Smartphone sensing runs in a custom study app we build as part of our service
  • The standard Participant App does not include sensing
  • We help you prepare and submit the Apple SensorKit approval request
  • Choose streams per study and per group
Consent

Opt-in, recorded in the app

  • Participants see each stream before they agree
  • Permissions are requested on the phone, stream by stream
  • Participants can stop sensing at any time
  • Usage is stored as counts and durations, never content
Use

One timeline per participant

  • Sensing joins wearable data, questionnaires and EMAs
  • Feed participant context and adaptive interventions
  • Monitor gaps with reminders and alerts
  • Export de-identified data for analysis
