Funding for Innovation: Modular R01s in Cancer Control and Population Sciences

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has issued a new funding opportunity, PA-25-172, to catalyze research in cancer control and population sciences. As the complexity of oncology research grows, evidence-based interventions in population health remain critical for reducing cancer incidence and mortality. According to Hiatt and Rimer (2016) in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, the integration of population science with clinical practice is essential for advancing the National Cancer Program’s goals.

Scope of Research

This initiative focuses on the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) mission to reduce risk and enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors. Key areas of interest include:

  • Statistical and Analytic Methods: Decision modeling and new tools for geographic cancer trends.
  • Digital Health and Data Science: Development of digital health tools for underserved populations and the use of AI in oncology.
  • Healthcare Delivery Research: Strategies to enhance palliative care and understanding clinical pathways to diagnosis.
  • Cancer Survivorship: Investigating the long-term effects of treatment and care coordination models.

Eligibility Requirements

A wide array of entities is invited to apply to ensure a diverse research portfolio. Eligible organizations include:

  • Public and Private Higher Education Institutions.
  • Nonprofit Organizations and For-Profit Businesses (including Small Businesses).
  • State, County, and Local Government Agencies.
  • Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities and Foreign Components of U.S. Organizations.

Partnership and Budgetary Guidelines

The funding follows a modular budget format, where direct costs cannot exceed $250,000 per year. While the modular cap is firm, consortium Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs are excluded from this limit, encouraging collaborative partnerships across multiple institutions. The maximum project period is five years.

Deadlines: The earliest submission date is January 5, 2025. Standard NIH dates (February 5, June 5, and October 5) apply for subsequent cycles through January 8, 2028.
